Raquel Ferreira is the Perfect POBO Candidate
After wearing all the hats in Boston's front office, Ferreira's resumé speaks for itself
Last month, we implored the Mets to not limit themselves in their search for a president of baseball operations. With close to a dozen “thanks, but no thanks” and counting, it’s safe to say they haven’t had any issues in that department.
We also suggested breaking the mold if the opportunity arose. It appears the organization has similar thoughts.
According to Andy Martino of SNY, the Mets have requested permission to speak with Boston Red Sox executive vice president and assistant general manager Raquel Ferreira regarding the vacancy atop their organizational roster.
This is smart, for many reasons. The first and most important is that Ferreira, employed by Boston since 1999, has all the front office experience New York should be looking for.
From director of minor league administration to director of minor league operations to executive vice president of all baseball operations and her current position as a pillar of Boston’s leadership group (Mets GM Zack Scott was a part of this team, as well), Ferreira has worn all of the hats.
And that should bode well for the logical next step in her career. A president of baseball ops should have experience in every nook and cranny of the front office. Ferreira checks those boxes in spades.
Red Sox star shortstop Xander Bogaerts credits Ferreira with helping him get acclimated to the major league way of life after arriving in the organization from Aruba as a teenager.
“She was really helpful in helping me get familiar with everyone in the organization and teaching me how to do stuff the right way,” he told The Undefeated. “She’s a very straightforward person, very honest. She’s one of a kind.”
Former Red Sox and Cubs top exec Theo Epstein, who promoted Ferreira twice during his tenure in Beantown, has raved about her contributions and multi-faceted skillset (via The Undefeated).
“As the years went on [in Boston], she became the backbone of all of player development,” he said. “And then, over time, she became part of the fabric of all baseball operations. And so, her perspective, her knowledge, and her wisdom were desired in every decision.”
Again, just an ideal direction for the Mets to be looking. In fact, based on her well-rounded background, the star-studded list of recommendations, and the World Series rings, to boot, Raquel Ferreira may actually be the perfect candidate for the job.
Now let’s see if the Mets agree and, more importantly, if Boston allows her to interview for the position.
