Strange times. It’s February 4. We’re supposed to be giddy with anticipation for this brand new $200-something-million orange and blue ocean liner to embark. Instead, we get hit with heaping portions of anxiety and concern for the 2022 season splattered onto our plates.
Over the last few weeks, the Players’ Association has reportedly made multiple concessions with hopes of spurring actual change. Major League Baseball has only dug their heels in further on most of those same issues. Evan Drellich of The Athletic has been filling in the gaps on all things lockout terrifically if you haven’t been following along.
Per reports on Thursday, the league has requested federal mediation (which the MLBPA would need to agree to) with the intent of speeding the process along. That’s odd. From a casual observer’s point of view, wouldn’t actual attempts at negotiating with the MLBPA accomplish that goal? Why call in a mediator?

Oh, right. To sway favorable public opinion away from the players’ side (which they’ve currently got plenty of). Make the MLBPA out to be the unreasonable ones and Joey Sportspages and Mike from Long Island calling WFAN at 2am will eat that shit up.
A federal mediator should be brought in when things reach a stalemate, not when one side refuses to budge off their gold and diamond-encrusted stilts.
Get to the table, start throwing actual numbers out there and quit worrying about bottom lines in a $10 billion-plus per year industry. There’s enough for everyone, even the players — you know, the wheels that make this thing move.
Nobody comes to the ballpark to watch the owners’ box, dummies.
