I moved to Manhattan last October. In February, I got a call from the Mets season ticket team to take a trip out to Queens for a day at the ballpark. Days later, I was a 20-game season ticket holder for the first time ever.
I was excited for a 2022 season that seemed promising for the Mets, but I never realized I was in for some of the best six months I’ve ever had. I can now say that Section 514, Row 8 at 41 Seaver Way in Flushing feels like a second home.
As of publishing, I’ve made it to 33 regular-season Mets games this year. I saw 28 of those games at Citi Field, while three were a flight away at Wrigley Field with another two down I-95 at Citizens Bank Park. I don’t think I even made it to 33 Mets games my entire life combined before this season.
Being a season-ticket holder has meant so much more than just the games. Of course, the Mets are historically good this year, but going to all these Mets games goes well beyond the many wins I’ve seen. It’s about the friendships made and strengthened, the ballpark experience, and the community this team creates.
It’s seriously unlike anything I’ve experienced before, and for that, I’m so thankful for what the Mets have provided me.
The season is far from over. Some might say it’s just getting started. After one final regular season game for me, I’ll be attending my first Mets postseason game(s).
If I’m still at Citi Field in the first week of November, I’ll know it was a truly, truly special season. But all that is unknown right now. What I do now is how freakin’ awesome this season watching the Mets have been.
Here are my favorite moments I’ve seen in person this 2022 Mets season. And while not every game had something super memorable occur, I’ll try to mention as many of the games I attended in this list.
April 15: Mets win in their home opener, 10-3 over Arizona. A great trivia fact in years to come will be that Robinson Cano hit the first Citi Field home run for the Mets in 2022. (Yeah, I kind of forgot he was on the team this year as well).
April 29: Mets throw only their second no-hitter in franchise history and their first combined no-hitter. On a chilly Friday evening, this was one of the most memorable sports games I’ve ever attended. Watching Edwin strike out that final batter literally brought tears of joy to my eyes.
May 29: Nick Plummer ties the game with a home run in the 9th, Mets walk off with an epic victory over Philly in the 10th. (I saw SEVERAL great wins over the Phillies this season).
July 9: Mets win in an absolutely epic ending, with Tomás Nido scoring the game-winning run to cap off a two-run tenth inning. This walk-off win brought an amazing end to a special day as Keith Hernandez had his number 17 retired by the organization.
July 16: Mets sweep a day-night doubleheader in Chicago, winning two nail-biting games over the Cubs. Wrigley Field was as incredible as advertised, and should be on every baseball fan’s bucket list. Huge shoutout to my friend Jordan for making the trip out to Wrigley with me.
July 26-27: Mets win two consecutive games over the Yankees, playing for a sold-out Citi Field crowd. The atmosphere at the ballpark was surreal and truly felt like a playoff game despite being midsummer. The July 27 walk-off win (Marte!!) was perhaps my favorite home win all season.
August 4-6: I got to see the Mets win three games in three days, including sweeping a Saturday doubleheader from the Braves. I also got to watch a game from a suite at Citi Field for the first time ever during this series which was such a cool experience.
August 13: Mets win 1-0, Díaz gets the save with Narco playing for over 43,000 fans, and I was fortunate enough to meet Mike Piazza before the game!
August 21: This has honestly got to be the best game I attended all season. It was one of the greatest comebacks I’ve ever seen the Mets make. The entire day, from getting cheesesteaks in Philly to waiting out a rain delay and seeing Mark Canha hit two massive home runs couldn’t have been scripted any better.
I got to attend this game with my buddy Tarun Sharma, also a contributor at The Apple and co-host of Simply Amazin’. What a legendary day in the City of Brotherly Love.
August 26: Another Mets comeback, walk-off victory. Seeing Citi Field go crazy after the Canha game-tying double and Alonso walk-off single is a core memory of my time in Flushing this season.
Thirty-three games down, but these past six months are just one long chapter in this 2022 Mets storybook season. My excitement for the postseason is off the charts, but I know there’s still work to be done before October 7.
Clinch the division, and then make noise in October. Regardless of how this season ends though, this year has truly made me realize how much this baseball team and this New York Mets community means to me. Now let’s go win the whole damn thing. LFGM.
Never any paywalls. Once it leaves my head, it’s yours. Of course, if you want to help keep the lights on, it’s greatly appreciated.
